COFFEY’S
CARBON REDUCTION STATEMENT
The more people are connected to their environment, the more they care for it.
We recognise the urgent need to address the global climate crisis and contribute to carbon reduction efforts. As a responsible and forward-thinking multidisciplinary design practice, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and advocating for sustainable practices from concept to creation. This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our strategy to achieve net zero, minimising our environmental impact while delivering innovative and sustainable designs.
Start at Home
Energy Efficiency:
Targets: Reduce energy consumption in our own office by 25% in the next two years by implementing energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems.
Actions: Conduct an energy audit and identify key areas for improvement. Install motion-sensing lighting and energy-efficient appliances.
Renewable Energy:
Targets: Source 50% of our office electricity from renewable energy providers within the next year.
Actions: Partner with a renewable energy provider for the supply of clean energy. Evaluate the feasibility of on-site solar panels.
Low-Carbon Commuting:
Targets: Achieve a 20% reduction in employee commuting-related emissions within the next three years.
Actions: Promote alternative commuting options like cycling, walking, and public transportation. Consider introducing commuting incentives.
Employee Education and Engagement:
Training
Targets: Ensure that all employees receive annual training on sustainability and carbon reduction.
Actions: Develop an in-house training program, and provide incentives for employees to gain sustainability certifications.
Sustainability Committee
Actions: Establish a dedicated Sustainability Committee to oversee our carbon reduction initiatives, facilitate employee engagement, and monitor progress.
Sustainable Design
Sustainable Materials:
Targets: Ensure that 80% of materials used in our projects are sustainable and recycled by 2025.
Actions: Collaborate with suppliers specialising in eco-friendly materials. Encourage clients to opt for sustainable choices.
Passive Design:
Targets: Reduce energy demand in our building designs by 40% compared to conventional designs by 2030.
Actions: Prioritise natural lighting and ventilation, and use shading strategies and high-performance glazing in designs.
Waste Reduction and Recycling
Waste Minimisation:
Targets: Reduce construction waste by 50% through optimised material usage and recycling by 2025.
Actions: Collaborate closely with contractors and suppliers to minimise waste. Implement strict waste reduction policies.
Green Building Certifications
LEED and BREEAM:
Targets: Achieve LEED Gold or BREEAM Excellent certification for 75% of our projects by 2028.
Actions: Employ sustainability consultants and actively engage in the certification process for our projects.
Sustainable Partnerships
Suppliers:
Actions: Forge partnerships with suppliers who meet sustainability standards, and collaborate on innovative sustainable solutions.
Contractors:
Actions: Select construction contractors with a proven track record in sustainable and energy-efficient construction practices.
Monitoring and Reporting
Carbon Accounting:
Actions: Implement a robust carbon accounting system, regularly track our carbon emissions, and report findings to all stakeholders.
Continuous Improvement:
Actions: Periodically review and update this plan to incorporate the latest technologies and best practices in carbon reduction.
Advocacy
Engage with Local and National Government:
Actions: Advocate for supportive policies and incentives for sustainable design and construction through participation in industry associations and lobbying efforts.
Setting Targets
Short-Term and Long-Term Goals:
Targets: Achieve carbon neutrality in our office operations by 2030, in alignment with the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge Pledge.
Actions: Develop a comprehensive roadmap to reach these targets, specifying annual milestones.
