CAST

Exploring craft and technique through layering, transparency, light and shadow with a global brand

FOR SMEG UK

Creating intrigue and delight through threshold and repetition, we utilised a piece of Smeg’s newest collection’s to create an intricate patterned screen. The multiplication of the heavy and industrial pan stand component paradoxically creates a landscape that resembles a delicate weave, whilst showcasing the brand’s rich heritage. It filters and diffuses light, casting beautiful, active shadows inside the store during the day and out onto the pavement at night.

EFFECT AS MATERIAL

As much as the screen itself, we were excited by the effect it produced. A striking shadow is cast by a mounted and digitally controlled light system, projecting dynamic shadows on the pavement and passers-by.

MAKING IT WORK

Developing the support and fixing method of the stacked pan stands included in-house 3D printing and collaborative design meetings between the structural engineer, the contractor and architects.

"Working with Coffey to create such an innovative, original, and thought provoking design enabled us to win a prestigious award. The team’s passion, creativity and originality has impressed and inspired all of us. It has been a very inspirational collaboration.”
